Ukraine-Based File Sharing Site Shut Down

One of the worlds largest file-sharing websites Demonoid has been shut down by authorities in Ukraine, where the torrent sites servers are based. The Division of Economic Crimes [DEC] acted upon a request from Interpol, raiding the Ukrainian internet service provider ColoCall resulting in a permanent closure of the site.

This follows hot on the heels of the closures of several other prominent file-sharing websites such as MegaUpload in the US. Several European ISPs have also been ordered to block access to file-sharing sites such as the Pirate Bay.

There are reports that the raid was deliberately timed with a visit to the US by Ukraines Deputy Prime Minister Valery Khoroshkovsky. The US government has been working to close fire-sharing websites based on the Notorious Markets List report, which listed Demonoid as one of of the services which merit further investigation for possible intellectual property rights infringements.
