EU Remains Distant For Ukraine

The European Commission, has once again stated publicly at a meeting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg that it opposes giving Ukraine a concrete promise of EU membership.

EU Commissioner Janez Potocnik announced earlier this month that "Our aim in the negotiations is to bring Ukraine as close as possible to the European Union in as many areas as possible, while not prejudging any possible future developments in European Union-Ukraine relations."

Poland has led the drive in the European Parliament to advance Ukraine's EU membership perspectives, and Ukraine's joint host for the Euro 2012 Football Championships remain its closest ally. However many other member states are sceptical about Ukraine join the European bloc, largely due to the widespread corruption the country endures.

It seems for now EU status is still over the horizon.
