Neptune Statue Damaged by Football Fans

While football fans in any country generally aren't known for being especially civilized, usually the worst they do is beat each other up. However, unfortunately Gdansk's famous Neptune's Fountain statue was the subject of football fan shenanigans on the 18th of May, after two drunk Lechia Gdansk football fans decided to climb on it. They were both eventually stopped by police, but not before they had done damage to the famous statue of Neptune.

The fans were returning from the game, celebrating their team's victory as they passed the fountain and decided to celebrate some more. They climbed the statue and hung their white and green team scarves on Neptune. Unfortunately, their antics caused the tail to fall, damaging other parts of the statue as well as the surrounding enclosure.

Pawel Adamowicz, Mayor of Gdansk, called the event "an absolute scandal" and went on to say, "No real fan of Lechia and Gdansk could desolate the symbol of the city." Meanwhile, Gdanskie Melioracje, the company which administrates the fountain, is still waiting for an estimate of the damages. At the moment, the young men have only been charged a measly 250 zloty fine - a far too small price to pay for damaging a priceless part of Gdansk's history.
