Eyes on Berlin

World leaders and Berliners alike gathered in the German capital on Monday November 9th in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall.

The gathering took place in front of the iconic Brandenburg Gate, in front of which once stood a portion of the wall. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was joined by leaders of all 27 EU countries as well as Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. American President Barack Obama even joined in with a surprise video address to the crowd.

After the obligatory speeches, a series of decorated foam slabs, which were set up along the line of the former Berlin wall, were toppled like Dominoes in celebration of the reunification of the two sides of Berlin and of Europe as a whole.

The night finished off with a spectacular fireworks display and music from Bon Jovi and the Berlin State Opera.
