Editor's review

Frederick III so loved his wife Sophie Charlotte that, in 1699, he made a gesture somewhat grander than a box of chocolates or a bouquet of flowers.

That palace still stands, dominating Berlin's Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district by dint of its sheer size and magnificence. It is impossible not to be impressed by the unique blend of architecture and the splendid baroque gardens.

Step inside and be prepared to be stunned still further by the carefully preserved and restored rooms that are home to the largest collection of 18th century French art outside France among the many other priceless exhibition pieces.
