One Dutch specialty that simply cannot be missed in Amsterdam is the ubiquitous herring, available at haring snack bars and stalls across the city. Frens Haringhandel is a popular choice, serving up herring, mackerel, or eel just outside the flower market along the Singel canal. There are several ways to eat the herring, such as the traditional method of simply leaning your head back and gobbling in the fish whole! The easiest way is to order a broodje haring, which is essentially a roll filled with herring, diced onions, lemon juice, sliced gherkins, and a bit of mayonnaise. A delicious snack, and just over 3 euro.
